By now you should be familiar with the real-time strategy concept; build bases, tanks, infantry, guard posts, then go out and try to pound your opponents into the ground.

That's all that some of the lesser RTS titles offer, but Dark Reign should be commended for several excellent touches:.

An extremely solid back story that actually makes the fighting between the two sides more believable and gives you as a commander a good idea why you're fighting.

You will notice, however, if you have played Mechwarrior 2 , that there are some obvious -- ah -- similarities in how the storyline progresses in single player.

Multiple commands for each unit, including sabotage, guard, patrol, etc. Adjustable game speed -- if you've played Dark Reign straight out of the box, you'll know why this is necessary -- at the default speed the game is nearly impossible to control, with battles often lasting only two or three seconds before one side is obliterated.

Overall, the gameplay follows a pretty straightforward RTS model of building a basic base with a headquarters, power generator, and a resource collection station -- in this case, a water mining station.

What Dark Reign adds to this mix is a wild variety of units and structures, including the aforementioned hostage takers and suicide bombers, as well as a dimensional portal, tanks that look and act like giant circular saw blades, television towers that give your artillery a sweeping view of the map, and the dessicator -- a weapon which sucks the water out of everything in its path.

Additionally, Dark Reign allows you to set a series of waypoints for your troops, tweak how a given unit or platoon responds to a threat, change the aggressiveness of various units, order a trapped vehicle to self-destruct, and pack up your base onto giant treads and move to a nicer neighborhood.

That's all very cool, and some of it is truly innovative. The difficulty we had with the game though was threefold:. Even when the game is slowed down, the behavior of the "fog of war" effect in the game makes it very hard to defend against an attack until it's right in your base.

The sides are distinctly unbalanced. The Imperium side lacks the same sort of firepower that the Freedom Guard has, and thus it is very difficult to win a battle with Imperium forces in a head-to-head fight the Imperium favors sneakier tactics which are not all that much fun in a slugfest type of game.

Dark Reign employs the standard mouse-driven commands for building, setting paths for your troops, etc. Truth be told, though, despite all the fancy possibilities, there is really very little opportunity to use most of these functions due to the speed of the game and the simple nature of RTS games in general.

What seems to have happened here is that Auran actually listened to all the ideas that gamers had for improving the genre and tried to incorporate all of them.

And while games like Civilization and Master of Orion benefited a great deal from the likes of saboteurs, spies, etc.

Dark Reign uses a very nice SVGA graphics engine that is particularly effective in rendering landscape, vegetation, and explosions, all of which adds a much more realistic feeling to the environment -- there is no sense here that the graphics are tacked on or that the landscape and terrain was an afterthought.

In fact, the hills, valleys, rivers and ridges all affect the speed and effectiveness of your units -- a gentle rise will slow but not impede your armored units, while a higher ridge will force your tanks to go around while your infantry can still climb over often resulting in an unintended splitting of your forces and necessitating a bit of forethought before assaulting an enemy on high ground.

Required: U. Dark Reign is a definite contender in this fall's RTS sweepstakes, but in the end it is outclassed by the likes of Total Annihilation and Age of Empires -- a year ago it would have shattered sales records, but the competition is that much better this year, and while Dark Reign is a solid game and will undoubtedly end up being a favorite of many , in my opinion it has enough liabilities to preclude it from rising to the top of the genre.

It is, however, certainly worth a look, and worth buying if you're a fan of real-time strategy, especially of the sci-fi flavor. Overall, Dark Reign rates an Although their units are usually slower when compared to Freedom Guard counterparts, they are able to outmatch Freedom Guard units with increased armor and firepower.

Furthermore, Imperium units have a greater reliance on hover technology, which limits their use in extreme terrain but allows them to easily cross natural water barriers.

Freedom Guard technology relies on hiding their units through use of technology called phasing. Phasing allows units to quickly hide underground, making them effective for close-quarters ambushes.

The Imperium are directed more towards a blitzkrieg style of play, with units focused on supremacy in combat ahead of tactical flexibility.

Freedom Guard units are geared more towards an anti-armor role, especially to counter Imperium armor superiority, while the Imperium utilize more anti-infantry weapons to negate Freedom Guard infantry advantages.

Players can steal technology from other players, thus negating specific unit advantages and specialty. In order to do this, the player uses an espionage unit called the Infiltrator to steal weapon designs from an enemy Headquarters, the building tasked with producing construction rigs.

Once the plans have been successfully stolen, the infiltrator unit is then directed back to the player's HQ to incorporate the new technology in their production options.

The Infiltrator may steal as many weapon designs as possible while in the enemy headquarters but risks being exposed the longer the unit stays.

In the campaign missions, the player is given a number of objectives that must be met before victory can be achieved. These victory conditions follow the historical scenario being replayed - for example, a given mission might require the player, as the Freedom Guard, to evacuate or protect a particular unit or structure, or as the Imperium, to destroy those units or prevent their escape.

Dark Reign possesses a complex fog-of-war where line of sight is affected by varying terrain height and shape. Like many RTS titles, structures in the game consume power and do not function if sufficient power is unavailable.

Players can 'power down' buildings to keep their bases online, giving greater flexibility in base management. The game also features production queues, and where multiple production facilities of the same type exist, they automatically divide up production, or can be ordered to each focus on particular production queues.

A player can place any number of paths, each with any number of points, and save each one with a unique name. Units on a path can be assigned to patrol it, loop, or travel to it once, and units automatically carry out behaviours at each point - for example, a resource collector can be given a path to take it around an enemy base to a water deposit and it will treat this route as its standard resource gathering path.

Separate from waypoints, units can be given individual orders such as "search and destroy", "harass", or "scout", allowing them to choose their own targets, engaging and occupying the enemy while freeing up the player to work on more significant strategies or development.

These can be set individually for every unit, and the default setting can be changed, eliminating the need to change every unit if a unified strategy calls for particular settings.

The game takes place in the distant future. The player takes the role of a survivor of a faction of humans known as the Tograns, whose society was decimated after their homeworld became engulfed in the civil war between the Freedom Guard and the Imperium who were once both the Sprawlers and the Jovian Detention Authority JDA from Dark Reign 2 respectively.

As one of the last remaining Tograns that set off in hopes they might find a new refuge to rebuild and carry on the words of Alpheus Togra a famous research scientist and philosopher , the player is presented with an opportunity to go back through time and prevent the death of the founder, Togra, using an advanced probe launched by him just prior to the destruction of the planet Strata To use the device, the player must first demonstrate their worth by achieving victory in simulations of famous battles between the Imperium and the Freedom Guard.

The thirteen missions play out the events from the first skirmish between the Imperium and Freedom Guard up to the battle for and destruction of Strata The missions may freely be played from the perspective of the Imperium or the Freedom Guard.

In the thirteenth and final mission, the last Togran, the player, is sent back in time using the Chronomachine to Strata-7, and must use the weapons and technology of both the Imperium and the Freedom Guard to combine a force that will defeat both sides and prevent the complete destruction of Strata-7 and the death of Togra.

In the expansion, Rise of the Shadowhand , the story depicts the increasing desperation and despotism of the Imperium after the emergence of the Tograns as a third credible faction.

After a massive Imperium assault on Freedom Guard space, a fleeing transport stumbles upon a planet, at the other side of the galaxy, where the Imperium secret police, the Shadowhand, have conducted major research.

By coincidence, the Shadowhand simultaneously is faced with losing control of its advanced units due to the malfunction of their guiding AI, Osiris.

Dark Reign began life as a game called Corporation: Offworld. Developed by Auran's co-founder Greg Lane, Corporation: Offworld and its sister game entitled Wild West were demonstrated to Activision in June and a deal had been signed shortly thereafter.

Many of the units, and the unit AI, innovative tile-blending system, map systems, production systems and real time line of sight were already present in Corporation: Offworld when it was first demonstrated to Activision in The projected originally started as a fan remake, until it got licensed and approved by Activison.

The game contains all twelve missions of the main game. Edge praised the game's three dimensional terrain because it affects the movement speed of the player's units as well as their line of sight, concluding that Dark Reign "takes the realtime strategy wargames just that little bit further, and is a very fine game on its own right.

Next Generation reviewed the PC version of the game, rating it four stars out of five, and stated that "As a whole, Dark Reign is one of the better strategy games to come across our reviews desk in a long time.

By combining the best elements of past hits with a slew of new features and a wonderful mission editor, Dark Reign is sure to please. Dark Reign was a commercial success at launch, and Activision declared the game its fastest-selling product by that time.

As of that date, shipments to retailers had surpassed , units globally. Dark Reign ' s global sales reached roughly , units by June Tools supplied with it allow for custom-created AI profiles to be created easily and scripted events to be implemented.

As a result, there was a large community and several mods, including total conversions such as 'Edge Of Darkness', which added two new races and a host of new units and strategies.

Dark Reign: Rise of the Shadowhand was released on March 26, It also features two new sides, Xenite and Shadowhand, resulting in a total of four playable factions.

Each of the new factions contains its own units and buildings which expand upon what was available via the original factions, with the Shadowhand including and expanding upon Imperium units and buildings from the original game, and with the Xenite doing the same for the Freedom Guard.

Battles of the Outer Rim was released in It includes six single player missions, 79 multiplayer maps and a searchable map browser.

I might have been able to forgive the juvenility of the rebel plot; Katharine's complete lack of able advisers that allowed her to basically ride into a trap; and pretty much every other dumbing-down or surface-level execution of plot points, but this last critique broke the last straw.

Internal consistency and age of the target audience does not need to have a linear relationship : The younger the target age, the less internal consistencies matter.

So much happened, definitely much better than the second book. I really enjoyed this one! I was annoyed with the last one, but the ending sucked me in, so I've had Two Dark Reigns on my TBR pile forever, but I think this was my favorite one!

I felt like it was easier to read and keep track of everyone? Anyway, excited to real the final book! Jan 15, Suzanne rated it really liked it.

That was a bit crazy of an ending that leads up to the next book. I feel like this one moved a bit slower than the previous books. The blue queen and the mist aspects added a lot to the series because they add more mystery and is just intriguing.

Arsinoe has a lot going on with her dreams in this one that is way more interesting than in previous books, but she frustrated me in this one with some of her antics and decisions.

Jules situation just keeps getter stranger by each book. Now she has a following that you think is great until you see how invested they are in her potential future reign.

Regardless of the strained relationship between Jules and her mother, she makes a very selfless move for her mother. I am so excited for the next book to hurry and come out so we can see how this crazy world finishes.

My quick and simple overall: I have enjoyed the first three books immensely and am even more invested in the characters and plot leading into the fourth and final book.

Well, that was disappointing. I feel like I'm pushing at this 3 stars cause I didn't hate it but it also didn't really do much for me I've found her kind of whiny since the beginning and I was rooting for Mirabella and Joseph to end up together, but then he got killed off hmph.

This book was just way too much Jules and a lot of Arisone who I find to be boring. Her dreams of Daphne and The Blue Queen would have been a good novella but I felt like it didn't move this plot along at all until towards the end there's a "reveal" which I don't think is actually that mind blowing.

There just felt like a whole lot of nothing going on in this book. Even the climax fight felt anticlimactic. Which, maybe it's just me, but I guess I didn't realize she became so bad ass in the second book because of the dead queens' powers.

I felt like this book had to spend a lot of time just explaining that. I'll still read the hopefully last book, but I'm not that excited about this series anymore unfortunately.

I really hope the last book gets back to the sisters fighting and trying to kill each other, cause I sure do miss that. I have a couple ideas of how I think the series might end, but I can't decide how I'd want it to end.

Characters I couldn't care less about have now become people I'm rooting for. How the heck does that happen???

And why do I always cheer on the 'bad guys'??? And will there be a way to defeat the Mist without sacrificing my beloved???

With her ship officially over RIP Joseph , she's focused on protecting her sister, Arsinoe, while they try to make a life on the mainland.

I've been Team Mira since book one and this book only made me more of a fan. I know most people love Arsinoe or Katharine more, but I've always liked the fact that Mira was always an elemental.

She was always powerful and warm and kind and nothing's changed. She's awesome! I want to watch her call the lightning and storms and dance with the flames.

I was a little irritated with her for not speaking up when it was absolutely necessary, like calling out Jules for EVER thinking she could be a queen.

But I'm looking forward to how if she'll be able to fight for the cause, for peace, within the poisoner faction. I've been an Arsinoe supporter from the beginnning.

Who wouldn't love the princess who couldn't care less about the crown? Who couldn't care less about decorum or propreity? Who would rather wear trousers and fish and run with bears than wear dresses and drink tea?

Of course I loved her. But her idea of loyalty led her down a dumb road and I wanted to knock some sense into her. How dare she back Jules as a queen?

She's no freaking queen. And then to bully Billy and Mira into it was foul. However, with the dreams and the premonition forcing her to choose her fate, I loved how steadfast she was in her love and loyalty for her sister.

Find another way, babe! But her kingdom is suffering. Not only did Katharine NOT earn her crown, but in her pursuit of it, she's caused unrest.

The mist has come to the island, leaving dismembered bodies at her steps. And with a rebellion on the rise, her hold on the crown isn't guaranteed.

With Natalia gone, it's almost like Katharine has lost some direction. She tries to befriend Mira's besties, looks to Luca for guidance, and doesn't stop to just think!

I get that the spirits are basically driving the train, but c'mon. I'm loving the whole 'possessed' feature of Katharine's plot, however, I'm wondering if she'd be alive if the queens left.

Is she just a husk, broken apart, and only held together by spirits? Poor Pietyr, having to deal with only a piece of the girl he loves.

And that ending She defended Arsinoe at every turn and I was impressed with her naturalist skills.

But you see, now she thinks she deserves to wear a crown. Being legion cursed, she may be the most powerful person on the island.

But she's no queen. How do you grow up with a queen, love a queen, understand the tradition, and still covet the crown?

I get not wanting the poisoners to rule, but there are other ways. I was encouraging her when she kept being skeptical of Emilia's plan.

However, while I continued to be skeptical, she jumped on the crazy train. I'm not down with that so I'm against the rebellion.

It's funny because I've been dreaming of a revolt since book one, but not with Jules in the lead. I always envisioned it with Mira and Arsinoe leading the charge and with Katharine eventually seeing the light and joining in.

Jules frustrates me and I don't even want anyone to find a cure for her madness. And am I nuts for thinking that something is building between her and Emilia?

I wonder if they're being shipped by people? Does this idea have stans? Then there's Billy I've loved him for quite some time, but there was a point in this story where he had me so aggravated.

I thought his love for Arsinoe would get him through anything, but life on the mainland made him soft. I'm just so grateful he found his way back to Fennbirn with the sisters.

I think he left his balls there and I'm hoping he can now find them. I also hope he doesn't die. He's the last romantic interest left and I've shipped him and Arsinoe from the start.

Don't kill the last ship left!! The character that surprised me the most was Madrigal. When she was locked away in the dungeon, I enjoyed her spunk and her defiance.

I also congratulated her on finally finding some love and loyalty for her daughter and coming to terms with her sister, Caragh who I hope has a larger role in book four.

Better late than never, right? I could do without Emilia and Mathilde. I want more of Pietyr RIP? It fits in so well wit the others in the series and it looks so dark and mysterious.

I can't wait to read it! Feb 19, Christian rated it really liked it Shelves: i-turnnext-year-fuck While some of the plot points felt a bit inconsequential and unnecessary to me in the long run, this was such a nice next installment to the series and featured a lot of beloved characters, mystery the mythological aspects I've come to love from these books.

Also I'm patting my own shoulder for holding back on reading this once because I now only have to wait six more months for the conclusion.

Sep 08, Shaun Hutchinson rated it it was amazing. Jun 22, Jenna Major rated it really liked it Shelves: fantasy-reads , 4-star-books , reads.

I don't think it needed to be 4 books, but that is just my opinion. All the sisters are leveling up to each other in my books, which is a good thing for the series.

I enjoyed seeing previous enemies come to her side and her befriend them, show them that she's not completely the ruthless, un-caring Queen they thought she was.

Mirabella has really done a lot for me this book and is a great person. She doesn't want to be queen, she wants to be happy, but she sacrifices her need to be happy to protect Arisnoe with unrequited love.

I am excited to see Mirabella and Katherine potentially team up in the next book. She has lived her whole life a pawn of the temple, believing she would be queen.

She turned against the temple for her sisters, for love and fled the only country she has ever known.

On the mainland she was able to assimilate more so than Arisnoe and might have been able to enjoy it, but she spends her entire time caring and worrying for Arisnoe.

She follows Arisnoe back to their home country on a promise she knows Arisnoe will not be able to keep. She does this for love!

It's not fair : Arisnoe, I really like where her story line has taken her. I really enjoyed more background on the last Blue Queen and that plot arc of the dreams.

I really like her and Billy's relationship. I am writing this review a little later then I hoped so I am forgetting some things that I wanted to say, when I remember I will squeeze them in here.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I am excited to see how the story ends : What were your thoughts and what are your current sister rankings?

Definitely my least favorite one hmmm. Apr 28, Mellie Antoinette rated it really liked it. Hello Blue Queen, you perfectly titled wunderkind, you!

Take me to your misty finale! If she were still herself in her black trousers and vest, a fierce black and red-slashed mask over the scars on her face.

If she were still a queen. Honestly, though, I don't think I can describe how I feel about this book. Even though I really liked it is like I can't explain exactly that emotion.

But I'll try my best. Let's start with the characters. I love my babies and I'm so happy that I get to read more of them, specially Arsi "She would be if things were different.

I love my babies and I'm so happy that I get to read more of them, specially Arsinoe, Billy, and Mirabella. I swear their parts really thrilled me.

Arsinoe will forever be my favorite character in this series -which I find funny since she's so different from me, and I usually like the characters that are more similar to me- and I love the growth that we can see in her in comparison from the first book.

How she's more confident and believes in herself a lot more. Mirabella and Billy are my babies and I need to protect them at all costs.

I'm so glad nothing happened though, I'm not sure I could have handled it. No, I don't like her per-say, but I don't not like her either.

Let's just say it's complicated. The rest of the Indrid Down entourage was pretty ok, with the few exceptions of Pietyr, whom I think is really cute, honestly, he's kinda creepy but still cute, and what did Katherine to deserve him?

And Luca.

We can also talk about all the sitcom theme songs in this bio. Characters I couldn't care less about have now become people I'm rooting.
